Tom Bragg Monday 14th

Monday 14 Feb

Today I woke up with a sore throat not a good start. When we got to school my group was to do a full session for the first and it was amazing. We did football with 14 year olds. I think this made to session flow better as they had good English so I found it easier to coach. We also did a session with the 3 year olds in the gym. This was amazing it was so much fun as you can see from my part in the video. I found it really enjoyable and I found it very good and I feel like I have improved as a leader because of this.

Sunday 12 Feb

First weekend in Italy so it was good to have a bit more free time after settling in at San Carlo College.
Today we all went to lake Como, which was about a half hour coach journey away from our hotel. It was probably the coldest day we have had since we got to Italy so all the snow and water had turned to ice and it was quite slippery on the pavements. I didn't really mind though because all of us were sliding around on the ice and having little football games with each other by passing blocks of ice around while we went around the village.

We also planned to have a boat ride on the lake Como, which I was looking forward too. Jack and Kiri looked into getting a tour boat for us all, but once everyone saw the little peddle boats there was no changing our decision on how to view the lake. The boats seated four although they looked like could only seat about two! Jack Tom and Nick were in my boat and with every tour boat that came passed to drop off and collect people, we would steer and pedal towards it so we could ride the wave. Soon everyone joined in and we would all race each other to get to the wave first. This was so fun and we all had a good laugh. Once we got off the boats no one could feel their fingers and toes so we all went McDonalds for a hot choc. Being on the lake was the highlight of my day!

Liv Day 3: 10/02/12

Day 3:

10/02/12

Liv Loughlin Blog:

Today was much better than the day before, my confidence when speaking to the Italian kids had improved. Wasn’t afraid to encourage them to participate or to deliver a drill etc. For the first lesson we played hockey for about an hour, the Italian kids were so competitive! Then Greg gave us each a lesson that we had to plan within our groups. As a group we planned two warm ups and ended the lesson with a game, kids were a lot more disciplined than the day before and were very good to coach. So overall I enjoyed the morning! The Italian lesson was also better because of the more frequent breaks and us completing more work that was on a worksheet instead of copying of a black board. I feel that I have achieved my goal set the day before which was to be more confident when speaking Italian within a coaching session.

Liv's Blog day 2

Day 2

Today we went to San Carlo School for the second time this week, compared to the previous visit this was a lot more beneficial because of how involved we became when leading the different activities in the lessons.
The first lesson that we attended was skipping. The children were being assessed in the ability of skipping. The teacher was calling up the kids one by one to mark the ability; they were judge upon how many skips they could perform. We then decided to create and run an activity that involved the whole class instead of individual performances. We did this by running through a long skipping rope without touching the rope. This interacted all of the pupils instead of them waiting to be assessed, this was a major positive in the day.
The second activity was handball; we led the game at the end of the session, separating the groups into 4 creating a tournament. Before the game the pupils had to warm up, we were asked to too create and run a warm up for the kids we did a simple game of Traffic Lights. This was very beneficial, as we had to create and run our own warm up session and lead the full session.
We then went over to the swimming pool to observe the lesson. This was the most disappointing aspect of the day as we couldn’t get involved in the session as much as we would like, this was understandable as there was a swimming gala which was exciting to watch, the races were exciting as it was different to what happens in our school this was the reason behind our lack of involvement in this session.

The first day started off badly! Woke up especially early to get a shower, only to find that there was no hot water, icy cold showers aren’t fun. However arriving at San Carlo School was a culture shock. The teaching methods are so different! However San Carlo is amazing! There must be over 5 floors, a swimming pool, and gym. We got back to the hostel to find that the hot water was now working… this gave us a boost!

The second day at San Carlo was more structured. We arrived to be told that we would be leading a whole lesson to 13yr olds. This was very daunting considering we had observed a teacher the previous day struggling to keep control. However it all went well, Olivia and I lead a warm up and Eddie and Liam lead another. I thought this was a good idea as we were able to then swap the groups and give the students two different styles of warm up. We then went into lead a game of handball I thought that this was a success as the children looked to really enjoy themselves. The second day of Italian lessons went better. We got back to the hostel, had a power nap. Then we went out for some food. Spent most of the night sat in the common room just talking to other people in the hostel.

Simo's Blog One

The first day we were just getting settled in to the hostel and with what we were going do be doing Thursday. Today was our first day to get the chance to go to San Carlo School, which was a good experience. The school was awesome compared to our school as in the facilities available such as the swimming pool, the gym/fitness suite and the several sports halls and even the cafés. The first few days in Milan have been really interesting to see how the Italians live their lives in comparison with us. It may just be their culture but to me they seem inconsiderate and maniac’s when driving! Overall it has been a good few days & I’m looking forward to the next 2 weeks coaching and leading the Italian children. Also our leaders Kiri & Jack managed to sort all of us out with tickets to the AC Milan vs. Arsenal champions league game next Wednesday which is another exciting thing to look forward to. I am also excited to go sight seeing in Milan town centre and going shopping!

Day 1 in school Liv Loughlin's Blog

Day 1 in school:

Liv Loughlin's Blog:

In todays session I have noticed a number of differences within my coaching style. In England I deliver a number of coaching sessions on a regular basis and I immediately noticed some differences in this mornings session.  The first difference was that I was not as confident as I usually am, for example there were about five girls who were reluctant to participate and I would usually react to this immediately and encourage them to participate within the game, however I did not know how to react. I think that is this due to the language barrier; because my Italian is not very good and any Italian I do know I am not confident enough to use it. So as a personal goal for the next few days, I am aiming to get involved straight away and become familiar with the language barrier, this will hopefully make it easier for the rest of the coaching sessions. If I am to overcome this issue within the first few sessions, I am hoping to improve other weaknesses of my coaching ability, and as a result improve my overall performance as a coach.

Zac's touch down in San Carlo

The morning of the first day didn’t really go to plan with the showers not functioning properly and I just could not bring my self to brave a cold shower! My first impression of the school was that I thought to myself it was absolutely huge as it took us a very long time to wander around the building, gazing towards the high ceilings and thinking to myself why can’t my school have a swimming pool like this? We then split up into smaller groups to observe the Italian teachers lead a session. Got to be honest at this point I thought the kids were well behaved and had a lot of respect for the teachers, unlike most of the pupils back in England. I thought today was really interesting to get a view of a day in the life as an Italian pupil and I am looking forward to working alongside them and leading a session of my own. Yes and the highlight of the day was when we found out that we got tickets for the Milan v Arsenal game next Wednesday I was buzzin when Jack told us the news that Kiri got us the tickets!
